    Wow—what an amazing event to be part of! As joint organisers of the 2nd International Conference on CEA, alongside the University of Plymouth, we are delighted to share that we received some incredible feedback from attendees over the two action-packed days. The event brought together leading experts, researchers, and industry professionals to explore the latest developments, opportunities, and challenges in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA).

    The programme featured insightful talks and discussions covering a wide range of topics, from sustainability and food security to cutting-edge research and commercialisation. Just in case you missed it, here’s a recap of the key sessions and speakers:

    Day One

    The day kicked off with a warm welcome from Professor Ralph Fyfe of the University of Plymouth, setting the stage for the exciting sessions to come.

    Session 1: Strategic Overview of the Current State of CEA Technology

    Under the guidance of Professor Mick Fuller, we explored the broader landscape of CEA technology. Professor Richard Preziosi introduced us to the latest advancements in CRISPS and Up Vision within agritechnology. Professor Derek Stewart (The James Hutton Institute) provided valuable insights into the sustainability of CEA systems, assessing current practices and future directions. We also gained an international perspective from Professor Abdullah Alrajhi (

    Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), who shared the unique opportunities and challenges of implementing CEA in the MENA region.

    Session 2: The Role of CEA in Food Security – An Analysis of Current Commercial Practices

    Led by Mark Horler, this session delved into the evolving role of CEA in food security. Oliver Kaberry of Jones Food Company examined whether vertical farming has truly moved beyond the hype cycle to become a major player in fresh produce supply. Rixta Sievers from Grow Up Farms detailed the journey from innovation to implementation in growing high-quality crops for consumers. Wrapping up the session, Dr Paul Myers of Farm Urban emphasised the social impact of vertical farming and other ways to measure success, proving that "it's not just about the lettuce."

    Session 3: Scientific Approaches to Address Current Challenges

    Chaired by Katia Zacharaki (InnoPhyte Consulting), this session highlighted innovative scientific research aimed at overcoming existing hurdles in CEA. Dr Hail Rihan showcased interactive controlled growing systems designed for comprehensive plant growth and chemistry management. Charlie Guy of LettUs Grow explained the commercialisation process of novel research, illustrating how ideas transition from sandpit experiments to supermarket shelves. Finally, Dr Mark Else of Niab presented groundbreaking work on optimising strawberry production in TCEA systems.

    Session 4: Trade Show & Open Discussion

    The day concluded with a trade show chaired by Dr Hail Rihan, featuring a series of five-minute company presentations. Attendees engaged in open discussions and networking opportunities, making valuable connections within the CEA community.

     

    Day Two

    Session 5: Pharmaceutical Impact of Plants Cultivated in CEA Systems

    Day two commenced with a fascinating session chaired by Dr Simon Fox, focusing on the pharmaceutical applications of CEA-grown plants. Dr Lynn McCallum from the University of Plymouth discussed mantle cell lymphoma as a model for discovering novel therapeutics from natural sources. Dr Jasper Newman of Phytome Research Ltd explored the translation of CEA strategies into commercial applications for botanical medicine. Professor Saul Purton from University College London introduced the use of microalgae as sustainable recombinant platforms for producing high-value bioproducts.

    Session 6: UKUAT AGM, Trade Show & Virtual Tour

    The conference concluded with the UKUAT AGM, with official publication on the AGM vote to be released at a further date. Attendees then participated in an interactive trade show, featuring our members Boll Filter, Food Autonomy Lighting, Priva, FlexFarming, an open discussion session, and a virtual tour of the University of Plymouth’s cutting-edge CEA facilities.
